PreSave event doesn't change the access condition. With example

I have a form that when I save, in the presave event I execute onefield.access = "readOnly"; But it doesn't work. If I test on the event click of a button this works perfectly

Could you explain this further? It seems as if it would be much easier to simply make the field read only in the Value tab under Object.
