PDF Generator--Allowable MSWord file formats

After searching the documentation, I'm still not certain on what are the allowable input MSWord formats. It seems to be only *.doc; but what about a word document that is stored in the word ML format (XML)--is that an allowable format. It would be very helpful to definitively know the answer or know where to find the answer in the documentation for future reference.

I sent two simple sample files--one stored in .doc format and the other stored in .xml. I used MSWord 2003 to create the sample files. Thank you for any results.
