Invalid Barcode Value

I have a problem with a form containing several 3-of-9 barcodes. These barcodes are generated from data entered into text fields. But whenever the text fields do not contain any data, I get this error:

Invalid Barcode Value: Empty value is not a valid value for barcodes of code3of9.

As I said, this error is shown once per barcode field that do not have a value (yet), for example when the form is opened or by the use of a "Clear form" button. It would be highly impractical to have the field always having some kind of default value that the user have to overwrite each time he/she wants to enter a new value.

The form worked just fine in Acrobat Reader 7, but when the user upgraded to version 8.0 and 8.1, these errors appared. The form was created using Adobe LifeCycle Designer 7.

Any ideas how to fix / work around this problem?
