drop-down list: no default item ignored

I have a drop-down list with "none" for the default value, but when previewed, the first item in the list is the default.<br /><br />And if "Allow Custom Text Entry" is selected so I can add something as the default which is not on the list (for example "<please select>"), it still uses the first item on the list as the default.<br /><br />Am I missing something simple here? Why is it not allowing a default of <none>?

I found a work-around...

I make the first item in the list a space (hit the spacebar once). Turn on Specify Item Value. Then check (on events Exit and MouseExit) for that numerical value. If found, popup a window asking for a selection.

But this shouldn't be necessary. Is there a simpler way?
