Adobe has supported public key infrastructure (PKI) since Acrobat 4.0 in 1999. PKI can be used for digital signatures and encryption in PDF documents, as well as authenticating users in web-based cloud applications. PKI credentials can be utilized from software based certificates as well as smartcards, tokens, and other hardware security modules. In government, this includes the Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card and the Common Access Card (CAC) – used as federal ID badges.
