What is best practice for indexing AEM content into a search platform ?

Is there a preferred approach / best practice recommendation?

Some issues we've encountered: 

• Have to manually configure the publish urls
• Have to manually configure the fields to index
• No permissions (for internal search use case) 

Any feedback is appreciated.
