Partial redesign of a website which uses MSM

Hello,

Needed suggestions with regards to a partial redesign for a site which uses MSM. We have a site structure as below:

/global_master (only available in author & never published, rolls out to the below sites)

---/us_regional_site

---/asiapac_regional_site

---------/japan_site

---------/korea_site

---/eu_regional_site

---------/fr_regional site

---------/ru_regional site

---/latam_regional_site

So basically, the global master rolls out to the regional sites (e.g asiapac site is live copy of the global master), which in turn rollout to country specific sites (e.g. japanese site is live copy of asiapac site, fr site is a live copy of eu site). The above structure is representative (in all, there are 16 locales).

We need to redesign this website, in phases. in the first phase, only the top level sites (us, asiapac, eu, latam) would be redesigned. Redesign involves new templates & components.

The challenge here is, even though asiapac regional site is redesigned, the japanese or the korean site (which is a live copy of asiapac) should not be redesigned (in the first phase)

One way here is to break inheritance, but that’s not a feasible option as it would mean considerable manual work for the authors as they would not be able to use rollout.

Is there a recommended approach or any documentation to support this use case with AEM 6.3?

Thank you!
