Custom Login Modules & Groups

Hi,

We would like to use the AEM Closed User Group feature to restrict areas of our website to certain users. We would like to use a third party such as Gigya to handle user enrolment etc, along with setting the groups that the user belongs to using data held in Gigya. We're happy with how to do this using Gigya's API.

The question now is how to integrate this with AEM. The first part, login in, seems straightforward with a custom Login Module as per this blog post  and and this CRX doc page. However, the next part about indicating that this user belongs to groups as set in Gigya isn't clear. We really don't want to use the groups within CRX / AEM for this, as we want to store all such user data externally.

So my questions are : do I use the custom login module to also indicate which groups a user belongs to ? If not, is it possible to indicate the user belongs to groups using some plugin mechanism ? Or must we sync the user account into CRX when they log in to link into groups held within CRX / AEM ?

Thanks.
