Adobe InDesign CC DPS testing on MAC

Avatar

Level 1

Hi,

I was wondering, if it is possible to make an InDesign DPS file for iPad device (including interactive elements, such as buttons, automatic slide shows, video, pan & zoom effects e.t.c) and before uploading it to iPad, I want to test it on the MAC screen. The main reason in this case is, that I want to use it as a part for presentation on the big screen in the front of class instead of running around with one iPad device and showing it to everybody separately.

Hope You can help me to solve this challenge,
Agnese

You might check out Airplay apps like Mirroring360, Reflector or Air Server. Each of them has a free trial and about $15 to buy a single license. I had the same question because I will be training off site employees on how to use new apps via GoToMeeting and have to mirror my iPad to the computer and big screen (for those in house). Even before launching your app, you can load AEM Preflight or Adobe Content Viewer (depending on which DPS version you are using), You can run the content from your iPap in Airplay mode so its showing on the bigscreen while controlling the content walking around the room with your iPad. Furthermore, if you are using the previous DPS model with Folio Builder in InDesign CC2014, you can always select your Folio in Folio Builder and select the Preview On Desktop option on the bottom of the screen.

Another option for the Mac is QuickTime. Attach your iPad to your Mac, launch QuickTime Player, and then choose File > New Movie Recording. Choose your iPad from the drop-down list and your iPad will be reflected on your computer. You can then run your custom app or AEM Preflight to display your InDesign-based content.

Regarding Preview on Desktop for DPS, note that Preview on Desktop has been deprecated. It's based on old AIR technology, and it hasn't been updated in years. If you have updated AIR recently, you won't be able to run the desktop previewer because AIR dropped 32-bit support and the old desktop previewer isn't 64-bit compatible. If you haven't updated Adobe AIR, you can still run the desktop previewer, but it's not as reliable as previewing on a device.

I thought it was 32 and 64. Just want to be sure I have my facts straights.

Bob Bringhurst, is there a similar option to the Quicktime solution for a PC? Or is mirroring the only option for PC? I used to utilize Preview on Desktop for DPS with the depreciated view; however, now I'm on AEM. The mirroring solutions also have a depreciated view/lag etc, so if there are other options for PC it would be nice to know. (Also, the PC is on Windows 7....so can't load the Preflight app and go that route)

Yes, Bob, you have your facts straight. I edited my post: 32/64.

For a Windows 8.1 or 10 computer, you can simply build a Windows app or run AEM Preflight. If you're running Windows 7 or earlier, I'm not aware of third-party mirroring solutions, though I'm sure they exist. You might consider using the Desktop Web Viewer and displaying your content in a browser.

All suggestions above are good, although some of the AirPlay-like will require being on a common wifi network AND subnet. And that can be challenging sometimes.

OTOH, for the big screen you may have a switch for inputs, then you could use an adapter that connects the iOS device to the projection system. If you do that, I'd tape the adapter to the device--wiggling wires can be an issue.
