Visit test

Hello Adobe Community !

Yesterday I was making some tests on a new conversion Variable, and I noticed something I was'nt aware of .

Basically, I did a test, then I closed my tab and window, then I made another test on my evar value - and all within 30 minutes.
I believed that a new visit was going to be counted after closing the tab or window - but my results showed a single visit.

So, the definition of visit is :

"Visits: The number of sessions within a given time period. A visit is defined as a sequence of consecutive page views without a 30-minute break, or continuous activity for 12 hours. They most commonly consist of multiple image requests, however visitors that bounce can consist of a single page view."

Is this a normal behaviour ? Or maybe I'm doing something wrong on my workspace analysis ?

Cheers !

This is totally a normal behavior. Opening a new window/tab in the same browser within 30 minutes (without deleting browser's cache and cookie) will continue the same visit. This is as designed.

However, if you open an incognito browsing mode or a new browser, it would consider a new visit.

This is because visit/visitor is counted based on Analytics cookies stored on the browser. Opening a new tab or window takes the cookie value from the same browser, and hence the same visit.

Hope this clarifies!

Yes it clarifies,

I was sure it was this but it's so counter intuitive - so the Exit page dimension and metric are given after 30 minutes of exiting the page !

Follow up question :
So, as a gedankenexperiment, if data is sent to the servers every hour, and it takes 30 minutes of processing, visits that start 29 minutes before the batch are counted on the next hour ( as in the Hour Dimension)?

Yes, the last image request before a visit expires is the end of the visit - and that is taken as the Exit page. So, it would wait for 30 minutes to ensure that there isn't any further activity. Your understanding is absolutely correct.

Also, with regards to the follow-up question, it would be counted on both hour. Let me take an example, if a visit starts at 11.55 PM on 14th June and ends at 12.15 AM on 15th June, that visit would be counted in both 14th and 15th June. The same concept applies to every time period - hourly, weekly, quarterly, yearly.

So, in your example, the visit starting 29 minutes before the batch would be counted against the current as well as next hour.

Hello,1230474_pastedImage_0.png

Yes it does !
That was yesterday, now I'm seeing more visits that what I expected ( instead of one visit, i get 3 visits) I thought It had to do with your answer to my follow up question, but my results are all on the same hour it seems ! And I also have 3 Unique visitors, when I'm the only one.
So either someone is also testing with the same Id ( I have a prop hit segment on that Id), or maybe I have to wait so the visits and unique visitors are processed so I get the correct number.

Yeah it could be that someone is using your ID or you could wait for complete data to be processed.
