New Visits in Reports & Analytics

Avatar

Former Community Member

Hi,

I want to calculate %New Visits in SiteCatalyst. I know the formula for the same is

%New Visits = Total number of New Visits / Total Visits

But I'm not able to find out metrics "Total number of New Visits" to create a calculated metric for %NV. Can anyone please guide me how to get this metric via either some calculation or directly?

Thanks

Couple options for you:

  • Use a segment. The rule would be "exclude visitor container where visit number is greater than 1". You can even use the 'compare to segment' feature in adobe analytics to get the number of new visitors. This option wouldn't allow a native calculated metric, but would be perfectly viable in Report Builder.
  • Use the getNewRepeat plugin. This plugin allows you to split your visitors into two buckets - new and repeat visitors. You could then break down any dimension you're looking at by new/repeat.

Hi,

You can use the 'unique visitors' metric. It is the SC equivalent of what you are referring to as 'Total number of new visits'.

Here's some documentation on it.

Hmmm....  I'm not so sure about comparing the "Unique Visitors" metric to "New" or "Repeat" visitors.  "Unique Visitors" is a way that SiteCatalyst/Adobe Analytics "de-dupes" visitors who may have visited your site multiple times during a certain interval of time and counts them only once.  I don't think it has anything to do with whether or not they were a New Visitor (visitor id never seen before) or Repeat Visitor.

Back to the original question, I am not sure we can get SiteCatalyst to do this one for us internally. I think you'll need to do it in a spreadsheet with data you get out of SC.  For any period of time, I'd get your first time visitors visit count from Visitor Retention > Visit Number and divide that by the total number of visits for all visitors.

Shown below is a copy of the Visit Number report to give you an idea.... please let us how it turns out!

Here's the updated image I wanted to share which shows how to get the visits for First Time visitors.
