Hello,

I was wondering what analysts consider a best practice for when campaign tracking code should expire.

I'm interested in this in addition because:

  • If traffic came to the site under email.
  • The campaign expired after 15 days due to campaign expiration logic.
  • The same unique visitor came back to the site after expiration under Affiliate and convert.
  • In terms of standard marketing channel logic does the first touch equate to email and last touch equal affiliate if the campaign tracking expired?

Thanks,

Tim

Hi Tim,

It depends on your org standards and how long you want to wait to give credit to first touch channel. Once decided it can be set through Visitor engagement expiration

Assuming you have visitor engagement expiration is set to 15 days of inactivity.  The default expiration setting is 30 days.

Case1:

Day1: User lands on site through email. First Touch credit - email, Last Touch credit - email.

Day17: User does not comes back and visitor engagement expire due to 15 days of inactivity.  Marketing Channel cookies would be expired. The first touch & last touch channel will get reset.

Day18: User comes back through affiliate and convert. First Touch credit affiliate, Last touch credit - affiliate.

Case2:

Day1: User lands on site through email. First Touch credit - email, Last Touch credit - email.

Day10: User comes back through affiliate and convert. First Touch credit email, Last touch credit - affiliate.

Case3:

Day1: User lands on site through email. First Touch credit - email, Last Touch credit - email.

Day10: User comes back through organic search. First Touch credit - email, Last Touch credit - organic search.

Day18: User comes back through affiliate and convert. First Touch credit email, Last touch credit - affiliate.  Marketing Channel cookies would be reset to next 15 days on Day10.

Thanks!

Asheesh
