Rename mertics and dimension in workspace

It Would be nice if I could rename a variable in Analysis Workspace for a specific project.

For example, I just created a simple report for a colleague of mine looking at tracking codes and the number of clicks. For number of clicks I used 'Tracking Code Instances'. As a regular AA user, I understand what Tracking Code Instances means but someone who isn't a bug AA user might not know what it means. So, it would be good if I could right click on the metric and have an option to rename it. This renaming would only exist in the specific project.

Thanks.

This is possible today, but I guess it's not very intuitive.

  1. Create a table in Workspace.
  2. Right click on the metric header.
  3. Click 'Create metric from selection'
  4. Choose 'Open in Calculated Metric builder'.
  5. Label as 'Clicks', or whatever works best for your beginners.
  6. Click Save.
  7. Drag the new metric from the left rail to your table.
  8. Delete the original ugly metric.

Optional Steps.

Unfortunately this calculated metric is now cluttering up your left rail (but only to you, unless you share it), and you may only want it to be available in one specific workspace. To remove it from the left rail, click Components > Metrics, and then delete it.

The metric will still work on that table, and can be dragged to other tables.

You can also use this trick to create temporary segments to quasi rename dimensions.

instead of using "open in metric builder", select a second metric from the table and choose a function, eg. "divide". this will create a "local metric" not messing up your left rail. then "edit" the metric as usual (delete the second metric) and save.

now you have a "local metric" just for this project

drawback: if you delete the metric by accident, only ctrl+z (undo) can bring it back. otherwise the metric is lost forever...

remark: if you later decide you want to make it public (adding it to your left rail), just hit the link in the info popup. or edit metric and select checkbox at the bottom of the metric definition.

Do these directions still apply? I went to try this hack and unfortunately "Open to Calculated Metric Builder" is not available in my instance.

It would be extremely valuable to rename metrics so that we can maintain report continuity while correcting previously bad naming conventions that highly rely on tribal knowledge and jargon
