Dynamic 'Last Year' time option

We have fairly static time filters such as Last 3 full months, Last 13 full weeks, Last Week, etc. And I also understand I can go into Date Range Builder and build my own timeframe.

However in building reports and having more agility in analytics, a dynamic Last Year (LY) option would be great.  For example, if I want to look at Black Friday TY over LY, it would be easier to just drag in an “LY” filter to compare instead of creating a date filter which is then saved and static.

A more use case scenario would be looking at a promo from Oct 25 – Oct 28, if I want to compare TY/LY for this random date it would be easier, as well as usually in a meeting someone would ask “ok what about just Oct 26 – Oct 28”, I need to more agile than building a new date filter.

Another scenario is building reports and dashboards, having an LY column (which is the number one question we’re asked) to change as each individual changes the date range they want to see would be huge.

you can use the "dynamic date ranges" and define whatever dynamic date ranges you need: Calendar and Date Ranges

here are some examples of date ranges we offer our users:

- last month 1 year ago

- last week 1 year ago

there are more date ranges just created for our analyst, which all can be used to compare to some common date ranges.

remark: dynamic date ranges are always based to the day/date you use them. that means whatever date range is set for the report, the "date range" judt overwrites by calculating for current day...

I don't know if this already solves your idea, let me know if there is a date range you can't create dynamic or if you are looking for something else.

Yes, and I used dynamic date ranges to create my “Today LY” date range as seen below which takes whatever date I specify and subtracts 364 days:

But if I’m currently selecting 3 days, or 4, or 2 weeks, etc, this won’t change to show the equivalent last year numbers. I can’t just change the ‘End’ component to be ‘minus 363’, ‘minus 362’, etc because we don’t know what end date the user will be choosing

If the ‘End:’ component could read

“End: End of last day/ending day minus 364 days”

I believe that would solve it.

and what is you "calculation date" if it is not the "report date range"?

I think what we need is the possibility to have a date range relativ to the report date range AND more options to set start and end point of the date range.

example: if I select a date range like 25-28.19.2018 I want a dynamic date range LY = "start of report date minus one year to end of report date minus one year"

that means if Inchange the report date manually, the date range LY changes accordingly.

would that meet your expectation?

jen.lasser are there any plans for such dynamic date ranges?

Not currently, but we can keep an eye on this suggestion and see how much demand there is for something like this. Not counting anything out for the future!

I work for a publishing company and this is so much needed. The fact that it doesn't adapt to the date range selected in the top right is very limiting as some people then read the data wrong and starts to panic when they select the last 7 days and it compares the date range to a full month.
The solution from Urs_Boller sounds perfect as it would provide  the user a lot of flexibility.
