How do you approach building with AI with governance in mind?

Every day, I’m hearing from Adobe customers that they're excited to build with AI and move quickly to solve for real challenges and use cases.

 

But the biggest question mark is almost always the same: when and how to bring in legal, IT, and governance, especially when the technology is changing so fast that yesterday's guardrails might already need an update.

 

So I'm curious: what does that balance look like for you? What guardrails or best practices are already working at your organization, and at what point do you loop in the people or processes that keep things on track?

 

Whether you build governance in from day one or you're still working out where it fits, share with your peers how you're approaching it. 💡

    Great questions.   Bringing Legal, IT and Governance into the picture is really up to each organization.  I look at as what risks are you trying to protect against.   I feel an organization needs to be open to allow AI to work alongside the workers and not allow Governance to derail any progress that can be made as AI develops.   Governance should identify the behaviors, rules of engagement, how to follow the technology and most importantly, how to off-ramp the technology if risk appetite gets to be too much.

     

    I see two important aspects of managing AI in an organization (1) Human-in-the-loop and (2) peer review.   AI can help manage so many mundane tasks, as well as, the other extreme by being creative or deep thinking.   However, the human should consistently be involved a various stages of the game.   Responsible AI usage is not to let AI direct you, but for you to challenge the AI outputs.   Peer review is a pillar in making sure that you don’t become AI’s slave in what you are doing.   Having individuals outside any AI specific use case challenge and question how and why the AI tool is used is a good way to ground the organization.   This allows for the movement of guardrails, forces human interaction, and maintains the governance to be more open to the ever changing technology.

     

    To address the risk, much like any health and safety program, a risk map or risk assessment should be conducted on any AI Tool.   This is a difficult skill to hone, but taking the time to identify the risks of the AI tool and potential risk mitigation plans brings, peer review, human-in-the-loop and governance together to manage the AI tool.   Not to mention, this is also a good way to justify if the AI tool is right for your organization.

     

    Hope my opinion helps or gives others ideas on what I look at when working with AI tools inside an organization.  Open to thoughts or comments on this approach.
