Do you have AI brain fry?

I don't know about you, but I've built AI into nearly every part of how I work. And while my output has gotten undeniably faster, my cognitive load feels a lot different now.

I find myself constantly context-switching between tools and tasks, pausing and waiting while things process, and always monitoring what the AI is producing instead of just doing the work myself.

A study published in Harvard Business Review surveyed 1,500 workers and put a name on it: "AI brain fry." When you're constantly supervising multiple AI systems and juggling tools, mental strain increases sharply. But when AI genuinely offloads repetitive work, stress drops. The variable isn't whether you use AI. It's how.

So I'm curious: is AI reducing your cognitive load, or has it just changed the kind of effort your work takes?

Whether you've found the right balance or you're deep in the brain fry, I'd love to hear what this actually looks like in your day-to-day 👇

Interestingly one of the technology vendors I work with brought up the challenges about brain fry and AI work slop impacting knowledge worker productivity.

These are definitely, important problems to solve.

How do we give AI brain, soul and taste ?

I think it's less about giving AI a brain and soul and taste (although that helps!), and more about reimagining how we work at a deeper level. I’m talking about how we structure our days and tasks, etc.

For me, what is challenging is the stops and starts, the switching between tools, the juggling multiple tasks and chats, the human judgment and critical thinking layer you have to add over everything at once. Put all of that on top of your regular interactions, emails, and meetings, and it's a lot.

I'm curious what your vendor suggested as a path forward. Are they building solutions around the cognitive load piece, or is it still mostly a "figure it out yourself" situation?

I'm also wondering if employers and people leaders have a responsibility here. Helping teams figure out how to use AI effectively without burning out feels like a management problem, not just an individual one.

Your post is timely - today I feel exhausted switching between AI Tools.    We have specific AI Tools for specific tasks, so trying to keep the AI Workflows straight has been a challenge (and entertaining - or maybe I have cracked when I started laughing out loud as I felt like an orchestra conductor).

Brain Fry might be the correct term.   I was thinking more brain overload.   So, much information coming at me, yet I have to digest it all and remember, I have to be the human-in-the-loop.

Thanks for posting the question - I feel so much better now.

It's such a relief to know you can relate! 😅

I know I'm working "faster" and "getting more done," but it does feel like a different type of stress and mental strain. And it's something you have to adjust to in a way that is new and different from what it felt like to be busy at work 6 months to a year ago.

I can echo that. Maybe time to come up with a healing/calming AI agent which can focus on these specific aspects :)
