Product DNA - AI Moodboard Builder

[OVERVIEW]
I made a reusable moodboard template powered by AI that turns a creative brief into several visual directions and ready-to-use prompts for image generation. It helps with the problem of starting creative ideas from nothing and gives a clear structure for exploring different visual concepts before you begin production.

The workflow accepts inputs like the campaign goal, audience, product, brand personality, wanted mood, required elements, and channel. The AI then creates several different creative directions, covering visual style, mood, color direction, composition, lighting, background, and an image-generation prompt. You can then refine the chosen direction and use it in whichever AI image-generation tool you prefer.

[IMPACT]
Goals:

- Make it faster to go from a written brief to visual ideas.
- Quickly produce several creative directions rather than working on just one idea.
- Build a steady format for showing moodboards to stakeholders.
- Make AI image prompts simpler to write and use again.
- Cut down the time spent beginning creative concepts from nothing.

Results:

- Built a process that can be repeated to turn a creative brief into visual concepts.
- Produced several visual directions in a single workflow, which made it easier to compare and talk through ideas.
- Lowered the manual work needed to build early moodboard concepts and image prompts.
- Made the way creative directions are documented and presented more consistent.
- Made it simpler to bring in stakeholder feedback and refine a chosen visual direction before final production.

[LESSONS]
I find that the quality of the moodboard is much better when the business goal, target audience, product, and brand context are defined. Requesting for multiple different concepts is more effective than asking for one perfect concept. Moreover, giving particular composition, lighting, environment, color, and mood notes rather than vague terms like modern or creative will bring more accurate results.

In my opinion, the moodboard is just a starting point and basis for creation, thus it should not be treated as a final asset. It is always crucial to check whether AI concepts match the general guidelines or not.

The main point is to feed the most relevant and specific information to the AI to get the best results. I would add that the first prompt iteration is only a basis, and the next steps are where the magic happens. By providing specific comments on the results, the AI can understand the context and respond more accurately and effectively.

Next time, I would create a bank of effective prompts and visual directions by project type to have a common basis for similar campaigns.

[TRYABLE]
Step 1 : Start with the Product or Creative Brief

Collect the basic information needed to define the product’s visual identity.

Input:

- Product / campaign name
- Product description
- Business objective
- Target audience
- Key message
- Brand personality
- Desired mood/emotion
- Preferred visual style
- Required product elements
- Channel / placement
- Elements to avoid
- Any existing brand or creative guidelines

Step 2 : Ask AI to Define the Product DNA

Use an AI tool of your choice and provide the brief below.

Reusable Prompt:

Act as a senior creative director and visual art director.

Based on the product and creative brief below, identify the product's Visual DNA — the visual characteristics that should remain consistent across future creative concepts.

- Product/Campaign: [INSERT]
- Product Description: [INSERT]
- Business Objective: [INSERT]
- Target Audience: [INSERT]
- Key Message: [INSERT]
- Brand Personality: [INSERT]
- Desired Mood: [INSERT]
- Visual Preferences: [INSERT]
- Required Elements: [INSERT]
- Elements to Avoid: [INSERT]
- Channel/Placement: [INSERT]

Define the Product DNA using:

- Core visual concept
- Mood and emotional character
- Color direction
- Lighting direction
- Composition principles
- Background/environment
- Materials and textures
- Photography/art direction
- Product presentation
- Elements to consistently avoid

Then create 3 distinct visual moodboard directions based on this Product DNA. Make the directions meaningfully different in visual execution, not just different adjectives.

For each direction provide:

- Concept name
- Creative idea
- Visual style
- Mood
- Color palette direction
- Lighting
- Composition
- Environment
- AI image-generation prompt
- Negative/avoid prompt
- Recommended use case

Clearly separate information provided in the brief from creative assumptions or suggestions.

Step 3 : Generate Visual Concepts in Firefly

Take the image-generation prompts created by the AI and use them in Adobe Firefly or another AI image-generation tool.

Generate several images for each direction rather than relying on a single output. Focus on exploring the visual language, composition, lighting, textures, and product presentation.

Step 4 : Build the Moodboard

Select the strongest visual references from the generated concepts and organize them into a moodboard.

The moodboard should communicate:

- What the product should look and feel like
- The visual atmosphere
- Color and lighting direction
- Composition and photography style
- Materials/textures
- How the product should be presented

Step 5 : Compare and Refine

Review the concepts against the original brief.

Ask:

- Does the direction reflect the product?
- Is the intended audience represented?
- Does the mood support the objective?
- Is the product clearly represented?
- Can this visual language scale across multiple assets?
- Does it align with existing brand guidelines?

Select a direction and provide specific feedback to the AI for another refinement round.

Step 6 : Create the Final Product DNA

Once a direction is selected, summarize the approved visual principles into a reusable Product DNA reference.

[SETUP]
Required:

- Access to an AI text-generation tool of your choice
- Access to Adobe Firefly or another AI image-generation tool
- A product or creative brief to use as input
- Existing brand guidelines, if applicable
- A location for organizing the resulting moodboard (presentation, document, whiteboard, or design tool)

No coding or development environment is required.

The workflow can be reused for different products, campaigns, audiences, and visual styles by replacing the brief inputs and refining the generated visual directions.
